Yet these problems pale next to one last, really dangerous annoyance: Max. I often walk into her when she’s minding her own business, sitting in the middle of the floor. Sometimes I kick her part way across the floor. Fortunately, Max pulls into her shell, none the worse for wear. But one day, I know I’m going to stumble over her, fall flat on the floor, and fracture an arm or a leg.

“How did you break that arm?” my doctor will ask as she’s setting the splint.

“I tripped over the box turtle,” I’ll reply. “She was walking across the living room—I never saw her coming.”

The doctor will raise one eyebrow at my inventive excuse. She really hasn’t heard this one before. I won’t bother to explain. She wouldn’t believe me anyway.

When I get home, I’ll call Sharie. Even if she’s never actually tripped over one of Alex’s turtles, I know she’ll understand.
